How this all started

Onward Adventures began with a place Bill and I both love: Westport, Oregon. As the story is told in Jim Albert’s book about Westport, the ship Onward arrived at West Slough in 1863. After its arrival,  Mr. West was encouraged to call the landing Westport. That connection between the ship’s name and our hometown made Onward a meaningful name for our business.

Bill and I went to school together in Westport. He was a senior when I was a freshman, and the town has stayed close to both our hearts. My mom later lived in Astoria, across from the school you may recognize from Kindergarten Cop, and I stayed with her a lot. When I moved back to the area and bought a home in Knappa in 2022, it felt like coming full circle.

During a visit to the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, Bill and I learned that travelers were looking for local guides who could also provide transportation. The Chamber connected me with a few visitors, and I began taking them out to explore. Their feedback encouraged me to turn those first trips into Onward Adventures.

With help from the Small Business Development Center and mentors in our community, we built a business around what we love sharing: local stories, beautiful places, and the freedom to follow our guests’ curiosity.

Bill and I married on July 3, 2026, and my name is now Katie Dombrowsky. We both love this business and the chance it gives us to share the Oregon North Coast with you.
